William Kentridge

William Kentridge is an artist born on April 28, 1955, in Johannesburg, South Africa. He began his artistic career in Johannesburg, where he still lives today. His work spans various art forms, including prints, drawings, and animated films. He is particularly known for his hand-drawn animations from the 1990s, created by erasing and altering a single drawing and re-filming it. This process is meticulously executed, with each alteration appearing on screen for approximately a quarter of a second to two seconds. Kentridge's works are inspired by the socio-political conditions of post-apartheid South Africa and feature an expressionist style. He has also directed theatre and opera productions. The artist was awarded the Order of Canada in 2006 and received the Kyoto Prize in 2010.
