Vivien Zhang

Vivien Zhang, born in Beijing in 1990, grew up in China, Kenya, and Thailand, and is currently based in London. She received her BA in Fine Art from the Slade School of Fine Art and her MA in Painting from the Royal College of Art, both in London. Zhang's paintings question the palimpsestic nature of contemporary culture and the paradoxes of the information age. By combining motifs she gathers from personal experiences and extensive research in abstract spaces on her canvas, she creates 'alternative landscapes' where elements from different cultures and contexts collide. Recently, she has focused on ecology, particularly the evolution and classification of organic species, and map projections. She uses these subjects as tools to reflect her thoughts on migration and cultural identity.
