Tomokazu Matsuyama
Tomokazu Matsuyama is a Japanese-American artist born in Gifu, Japan, in 1976. He currently lives in Brooklyn, New York. His works combine both Eastern and Western aesthetics, influenced by growing up in Japan and America. This approach allows him to create a unique style that transcends cultural categories by placing traditional icons in a global context. The artist, after graduating from Sophia University in Tokyo, received his master's degree in Communication Design from Pratt Institute in Brooklyn in 2004. Throughout his career, he has exhibited at prestigious institutions such as Harvard University, the Museum of Contemporary Art Australia in Sydney, and the Japan Society in New York. His works are also included in important collections such as the Asian Art Museum in San Francisco and the Microsoft Collection. Matsuyama's art is influenced by various subjects such as Japanese Edo and Meiji period art, classical Greek and Roman sculptures, French Renaissance paintings, and global pop culture. By blending these influences, he encourages viewers to contemplate issues of cultural homogeneity and identity. In 2025, he will hold his first major solo exhibition titled "FIRST LAST" at the Azabudai Hills Gallery in Tokyo. The artist's works continue to attract attention in the international art world with their aesthetic and cultural depth.
