Philippe Hiquily

Philippe Hiquily, born in Montmartre on March 27, 1925, and passed away in Villejuif on May 21, 2013, was a French sculptor and designer. Joining the French Resistance at a young age, Hiquily briefly studied at the Orléans School of Fine Arts after the war. He later transferred to the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris, where he worked in the studios of Jean Tinguely and Germaine Richier. In 1955, he held his first solo exhibition at the Galerie de Palmes in Paris. His works, exhibited at The Contemporaries Gallery in New York in 1959, garnered significant attention; they were acquired by prestigious museums such as MoMA and the Guggenheim. From 1960 onwards, he designed surrealist-inspired metal furniture, drawing from his imagination. In the 1980s, he began producing bronze sculptures. His works prominently feature forms inspired by nature and erotic themes. His works are held in important museums such as MoMA and the Guggenheim in New York, and the Musée d'Art Moderne in Paris. Hiquily continues to provoke thought and emotionally engage viewers with his art.
