Marwan Kassab-Bachi

Marwan Kassab-Bachi (ö. 1934, Damascus), a Syrian painter and artist, is one of the important figures of Arab contemporary art. In his works, he explores the inner world and social relations of humans by combining abstract and figurative elements. He began his art career in Damascus in the 1950s, then moved to Paris where he developed his artistic language. Kassab-Bachi is particularly known for his portraits. In his portraits, he deeply analyzes human faces and figures, questioning them emotionally and psychologically. Themes and symbolisms specific to Arab culture are frequently featured in the artist's works. He used his art as a language reflecting the social and cultural structure of the Arab world, and his works are included in important collections worldwide.
