Louise Bourgeois

Louise Bourgeois (born 25 December 1911, Paris, France – died 31 May 2010, New York, USA) was a French-American artist. Throughout her career, she produced works in various fields such as sculpture, painting, and printmaking. Bourgeois is particularly known for her large-scale sculpture and installation art. Her works often explored themes such as family, sexuality, death, and the subconscious. Bourgeois began her art education in Paris, studying with prominent artists such as Fernand Léger. In 1938, she married American art historian Robert Goldwater and moved to New York, where she continued her artistic career. One of Bourgeois's most famous works is her monumental spider sculpture, "Maman." This sculpture is an homage to her mother, symbolizing her protective and nurturing qualities. The artist's works have been exhibited in prestigious museums worldwide. The 1982 retrospective exhibition at the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in New York was the first retrospective the museum dedicated to a female artist.
