Katharina Grosse
Katharina Grosse, born in Freiburg, Germany in 1961, is a revolutionary artist who freed painting from the confines of the canvas and brought it into architectural spaces and landscapes. Grosse is known for the monumental and psychedelic color fields she creates using industrial spray guns. The artist invites the viewer to "step inside" the painting by spraying paint directly onto walls, floors, building facades, and even landforms. Her art is based on the aggressive yet poetic invasion of space by colors; this approach completely eliminates the hierarchy between painting, sculpture, and architecture. Today, working from her studios in Berlin and New Zealand, Grosse is represented by giants like Gagosian and König Galerie, and she executes large-scale public art projects around the world. The artist, who has recently made a name for herself with "site-specific" installations at museums such as Centre Pompidou-Metz and Hamburger Bahnhof, continues her radical productions that shake our perceptions by utilizing the physical presence and energy of paint.
