Carlos Cruz-Diez

Carlos Cruz-Diez (August 17, 1923 – July 27, 2019) was an artist born in Caracas, Venezuela, and regarded as one of the leading figures in modern art. As a prominent representative of kinetic and optical art (Op Art), Cruz-Diez brought an innovative approach to art by exploring the perception and dynamics of color. Cruz-Diez began his artistic career in the early 1950s with figurative works, gradually moving towards abstraction and beginning to examine the relationship between color and movement. As a result of his research on color phenomenology in 1955, he produced important series such as "Couleur Additive" and "Physichromie". In these works, he made art interactive by offering changing color experiences with the viewer's movement. Cruz-Diez moved to Paris in 1960, where he continued his art career, and his works were exhibited in many museums and galleries around the world. His works such as "Chromosaturation" and "Physichromie" emphasized the change of color in space and time and positioned the viewer as an active participant. Cruz-Diez's works pushed the boundaries of color and movement and added a new dimension to art. By prioritizing the viewer's perception and experience, his art has gained an important place in the evolution of modern art.
