BUBİ
Born in 1956, Bubi (David Hayon) pursued psychology and anthropology at Istanbul University's Faculty of Letters before dedicating himself to art. He is known for his unique artistic language developed across painting, relief, sculpture, and installation. Since the 1970s, his research into different techniques and materials has led him to develop an experimental production practice that transcends the traditional canvas surface. While Bubi's early works featured expressionistic figurative paintings, in later years, he gravitated towards writing, graffiti, motif repetitions, and collage-based surface compositions. Over time, he began to alter the physical structure of the canvas, producing three-dimensional surfaces, reliefs, and cage-like forms. The works he created by combining various everyday materials such as rope, fabric, wire, cardboard, and metal in different periods form a significant part of his boundary-pushing approach. Chance, repetition, deformation, and deconstruction play crucial roles in Bubi's work. The artist works with an understanding that emphasizes irregularity, rupture, and natural formation rather than aesthetic perfection. This approach allows for a blend of both primitive and contemporary forms of expression to be seen in his works. The artist, who has held numerous exhibitions both domestically and internationally, has works featured in various collections and is considered to hold a unique position in Turkish art with his paintings, reliefs, and three-dimensional surface works.
